South Carolina needs sentencing reform

As Congress enters election season, many believe that the only thing that matters is the campaign. But in a little-publicized announcement in late July, House Speaker Paul Ryan said that there will be a vote next month on important criminal justice reform legislation.

It is essential that our South Carolina Representatives stand and be counted on this matter.

Over the past 20 years, I have served as a sheriff of Richland County. As sheriff, my first priority is public safety. Nobody knows better the danger that some criminals pose to our communities. We must continue to work hard to ensure violent criminals are off our streets.
